Monday, February 25, 2002, 6:30 PM Program – Hawaiian Applique by Donna and Fran with Paula hosting. Supplies you need to bring: one 20-inch square of a plain color fabric (muslin would be ok) for the background; one 16-inch square to make the applique design; both fabrics should be 100% cotton. Also bring sewing needles, applique thread to match your fabric, pins—whatever you use to applique.

For additional information and pictures of Hawaiian applique, visit this site: Hawaiian Quilt Research Project,

If you still have a Funky Chicken block for the charity quilt, Fran wants these this month.
If you took a Round Robin bag, remember to bring your beginning masterpieces to trade with other members? Will Fran let us take a peek? A brief reminder about directions is given below.

If you want to go to the March 16th Gathering of Quilters, talk to Carol Honderich or Beulah Sample ASAP. Cost is $15 and registration deadline is Feb 17th. See more details at the end of this newsletter.

Invitation to join a new Round Robin Project. Project runs from Feb – July 2002. Participants will be involved in helping each other create a small quilt that will be made up of 6 horizontal rows. Each row will have a theme: trees, architecture, stars, flowers, triangles, quilter's option.

As a participant in this project you will put together a small collection of fabric - we'd suggest at least 6 fabrics (1/2 yard each) -- think of a theme for your quilt. It could be a collection of Thimble Berry fabrics, or batiks, or florals, or pastels, or your favorite colors, or something wild. Whatever you like. In the first month you will use this fabric collection to create one of the six rows listed above, following the guidelines Fran will provide. You may use applique techniques, paper piecing, hand piecing, whatever you like.

At the February meeting (and each month after that for the length of the challenge) your project will be swapped with a different quilter who will add another row to your quilt, choosing one of the six that hasn't been done. You'll be surprised and thrilled each month as you watch your "baby" growing into a quilt.

Don't let lack of experience keep you from participating. Maple Leaf Quilters are available with support and assistance if you need help along the way -- just ask.

Monday, March 11, 2002, 7 PM. Sew What at Edith's.

Monday, March 25, 2002. Open Sewing - bring something to work on - either hand or machine. For those of you who need a MLQ name tag, there will be an area set up to make these by foundation piecing. Please bring white, green and brown fabric scraps.

Program and Hostess Schedule for the 2001-2002 year. This schedule is flexible. If you need to switch months please make those arrangements and let Carol or Edith know at least 6 weeks before the date what the program will be.

NEW PRODUCTS

Saw these on the Saturday morning sewing and quilting shows on WNIT last week….. The first was fusible batting that eliminates the need for hand basting or pin basting. The adhesive supposedly holds up as you work on the quilt but washes away with the first washing so as not to remain stiff.

The other product was fusible quilting templates to iron on the quilt top to guide you in stitching. It supposedly doesn’t shift as you sew over it, and it also washes away with the first washing. You can iron on smaller square sections or buy larger pieces to do the entire quilt. If you try these products let others know what you think about them.
