September 2005

Goshen, Indiana

Sylva Keenan , Editor

Hi To All

We had a fun and informative meeting working on the Magical Hexagon program under Becky and Sue’s direction. The final results can be very different depending on the number and color of the fabrics used.
Remember Peggy’s family, her father-in-law passed away. Also remember all those affected by Hurricane Katrina, help out where you feel led.
We had two members join in August, Claire Baker and Leona Martin. I will be getting out an updated Guild Roster.
The Mennonite Relief Sale is on September 23 and 24. Elaine would appreciate help with quilt set-up. It will be interesting to see how much our “Seven Sisters” quilt brings at the auction.

Laura – her guest Helen brought a finished quilt made out of bright neon material!
Naomi – had another baby quilt, all finished!
Elaine – brought an extra quilt pattern to auction off. She also made 3 quilts for MCC using 5 & 6 inch squares from material bought at Edith’s mother’s estate sale.
Beulah – had her pink and purple (sampler made with squares given to her by the guild in appreciation for being treasurer several years) quilt pieced together. It finished out to be a 100 inch square quilt. She’s making the backing out of many pieces of pink and purple material from her stash. She also had another baby quilt finished.
Claire – brought in 3 of her quilts that she was sending to Washington State for a “Dear Jane Quilt Show.” They were called “Autumn Jane,” “Neon Bright Jane” and the “Quilted Diamond Jane” quilt. She was also working on an appliquéd “Birds of Paradise” block.
Carol – showed us her “Dear Hannah Round Robin” that she was also sending to the Washington State quilt Show
Edith – “in photos”. She is also sending quilts to the Washington State quilt show.
Barb – showed us a Letter Quilting Book. She also has been busy practicing her machine quilting on a baby quilt, and a Halloween Wall-hanging. She also visited her very favorite quilt store way down south earlier in the month. Much needed therapy she said!
Leona – showed us her very first attempt at appliquéing!
Becky – showed us a Sun Bonnet Sue pillow that she made for a friend’s baby. She also showed us the finished Seven Sisters quilt that she hand quilted!! This will be given to the Mennonite Relief Sale as a donation for the auction. Thanks Becky for all your hard work! Thanks also to all the quilters that contributed to making the quilt!
Fern – brought her “Best of Show” quilt that she had entered in the Elkhart County Fair this year. It was called “Chains of Grandma’s Love.”

Refreshments were provided by Betty and Fern!! Thank you for a delicious snack!

Business: “Yellow Brick Road” quilt pattern was auctioned off for $3.00 MLQ Name Tag, finished, was also auctioned off for $4.00.

Carol is busy creating a MLQ site on She will inform us about more detail as she fine tunes it. You can see the site at this link: At this group site you can share messages, show off photos of your quilts and BOM blocks, look at our guild calendar and add program information there, add a link to a favorite website, or share a computer file or block pattern, or find the link to our newsletter. Please feel free to add information here.

Edith is sharing the “Passing on the Comfort” book.

Elaine discussed the need for volunteers at the Mennonite Relief Sale on Friday and Saturday. She sent around a sign up sheet.

Program: Becky and Sue presented the pattern called “Magical Hexagons”. Large hexagons were sewn together, cut into triangles and then rearranged into a delightful design! It turned out to be very interesting and beautiful! Thanks Becky and Sue!

Block of the Month Project
Jan Goppert prepared the following information: Traditional Design - Pattern for 12 inch finished block. The members at the June meeting decided to have a Block-of-the-Month project this year. It was decided to have the patterns be traditional designs for a 12" finished block. The blocks can be traditional designs with a "twist" if it is your own design creation.

If you are looking for block ideas for this project on the internet, you might try this site:
Quilt Blocks Galore, You will find hundreds of quilt blocks patterns. You will take the pattern home with you and make the block for yourself with your choice of fabrics. Bring the finished block (or blocks) for "Show and Tell" the next month. If you are ambitious, maybe you could make 2 blocks. Make one block for yourself and one block to donate to the guild. At the end of a year we would have quite a collection of blocks to make opportunity quilts (for raffle) or charity quilts. The following people have signed up to bring a block design pattern for one month of the guild's Block-of-the-Month project:
