November 2001 Meeting. We continued our tradition of a Thanksgiving carry-in meal in November and enjoyed showing off our former UFO's. We enjoyed fantastic food and wonderful fellowship. By popular demand Phyllis is sharing her recipe for Caramel Bread Pudding:
6 slices day old bread, cut into 1/2" cubes (don't use your rotary cutter for this).
1 C hot water
1 C brown sugar (packed)
4 eggs, lightly beaten
2 C warm milk
1/2 C sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/8 tsp salt
Place bread in greased 2 qt baking dish. Combine water and brown sugar, pour over bread. Combine remaining ingredients and pour over bread. Bake at 350 degrees for 50-60 minutes or until a knife inserted in center comes out clean. Serve warm or cold. Yield 6 to 8 servings. (Phyllis increased the recipe for our group by 1/2).

Invitation to join a new Round Robin Project. At the January meeting Fran will be introducing a Round Robin project that is open to anyone interested in participating in this fun challenge. The project will begin with our February meeting and continue for 6 rounds over the next 6 months. If you've never participated in a round robin quilt challenge you should definitely consider this one. Participants will be involved in helping each other create a small quilt that will be made up of 6 horizontal rows. Each row will have a theme: trees, architecture, stars, flowers, triangles, quilter's option.
As a participant in this project you will put together a small collection of fabric - we'd suggest at least 6 fabrics (1/2 yard each) -- think of a theme for your quilt. It could be a collection of Thimble Berry fabrics, or batiks, or florals, or pastels, or your favorite colors, or something wild. Whatever you like. In the first month you will use this fabric collection to create one of the six rows listed above, following the guidelines Fran will provide. You may use applique techniques, paper piecing, hand piecing, whatever you like.
At the February meeting (and each month after that for the length of the challenge) your project will be swapped with a different quilter who will add another row to your quilt, choosing one of the six that hasn't been done. You'll be surprised and thrilled each month as you watch your "baby" growing into a quilt.
Don't let lack of experience keep you from participating. Maple Leaf Quilters are available with support and assistance if you need help along the way -- just ask.

BIRTHDAY FAT QUARTER CLUB. From June, 2001-May, 2002 we encourage you to join the Maple Leaf Quilters Birthday Fat Quarter Club. Here's how it works: When you sign up you are committing yourself to provide a birthday card and fat quarter of fabric (approx. size: 18" x 20-22") in the color and/or theme chosen by that particular month's Birthday Gals. We will use the regular 4th Monday evening meeting as the time to present the cards and fabrics to the participants. Fabric themes you might choose for yourself could be: "purples" or "cat fabric" or "batiks" or "Thimbleberry fabrics," -- anything you like and want to collect. When purchasing your gift fabric, please buy good quality 100% cotton quilting fabrics. You can use fabric from your stash if it fits the theme/color being requested. Finding the perfect fabric and birthday card for each of the other members will be lots of fun. If you sign up late you will be responsible to make up the gals who have already celebrated their birthdays. -- Carol HonderichBirthday Club Members. Please check the list and make sure you are current with your gifts.

Hosted by the Bernen Towne and Country Quilters
Dear Fellow Quilting Enthusiasts,
The 12th annual Gathering of Ouilters will be held Saturday, March 16, 2002, at the Mendel Center for the Performing Arts in Benton Township, Michigan. Located on the campus of Lake Michigan College, the Center is east of St. Joseph/Benton Harbor in a beautiful rural setting just minutes from I-94 Exit #30. The Mendel Center is handicapped accessible. All events are under one roof.
Speaker: DeLoa Jones is a member of our guild and author of "Scraps Organized to Perfection" to be published by the American Ouilters Society in the Spring of 2002. (We plan to have the book available at the Gathering!) DeLoa's love of quilting started in childhood and has continued as she explores new, quick techniques. The book features DeLoa's system of organizing scraps and patterns and includes 14 scrap projects using your "stash." The Gathering presentation will include the fourteen projects from her book, as well as an additional twenty-five quilts showcasing her scrap organizing methods.
The Gathering 2002 features a large vendor mall, quilt show, door prizes, lunch, souvenir canvas goodie bags, Show and Tell and more! The day's events also include the traditional Block Exchange, Charm Square Exchange, and Ugly Fabric Exchange (and contest). A limited number of specially designed Gathering 2002 pins will be available for purchase.
Block Exchange: In keeping with the theme of"Scrap Play" we want to help you use up those scraps and have an opportunity to win friendship blocks. There are two size categories featuring two different blocks:
6 1/2'' block - Scrappy Nine Patch: Center block is unbleached muslin to allow for signature.
12 1/2" block - Scrappy Churn Dash: Use unbleached muslin for background to allow for signing. ~Iore detailed instructions will arrive in the registration packet.)
Charm Exchange: Set of 5 inch squares of ten different fabrics. Place them in a plastic bag and exchange your bag for another at the table. Add to your charm stash!
Ugly Fabric Exchange (Beauty is in eye of the beholder): Place 1/2 yard of 100% cotton fabric in a brown paper bag. Label the front with your name and address and exchange your bag for another at the table. Next year, bring your completed project back for a viewer's choice award.
